The 2019 local elections will include a very important celebration in Norway; 100 years of universal suffrage. While women had secured voting rights a few years earlier it wasn’t until 1919 that finally saw the inclusion of voting rights for the poor, the welfare recipient, the non-tax paying citizen. The proponents of this struggle were all jailed for attempting to dismantle the constitution. The fight for suffrage always includes a battle against the constitution, and it is time to do it again. Women did it by voting illegally, and if that’s what we have to do, we will.
The Intelligence Party will be the only party taking this celebration seriously by submitting its platform to the table. It’s time to change voting rights again. If that means by voting illegally, we are just following a proud tradition of securing and expanding the very notion of democracy.
